Footprints

I started the footprints project last year, and now I have 3 sets of feet to look back at.

I gotta say this year was definitely easier than last. I got him excited about fingerprints, and after that other body part (like his feet) were easy. The hardest part was getting him tired of the fingerprint pad and letting me put it away. We inked his and my palms, and he was gearing up to do my feet. Boy will that be a whole lotta ink!

Isn’t it amazing how much his feet have grown in 2 years? It just strikes me to think of the size difference between G and his little brother.

The BIG boy room

We moved G to his new room on Friday night. Overall, it went surprisingly well.

Our evening started as we prepped G for bed-time, telling him that he would sleep in his new BIG boy room and his new BIG boy bed. He’s been in the room many times before as we’ve been building it out, and played on the new bed before, so thankfully it wasn’t like opening the door to a completely new space and saying “This is where you’ll be living from now on!” But it broke my heart when he saw his Nubs and his blanket on the new bed;  ran over, grabbed them and then took them back to the nursery to put them in the crib. At that moment I panicked on the inside thinking “Holy cow! Why did I think such a big change would work? This is painfully going to suck!”

But it kind of worked out. He climbed out of his bed 3-4 times the first night, and I put him back each time. He ultimately got the message and crashed out. I think it helped that it was a bit past his bed-time already and he was pretty tired. That plus the fact that at daycare they sleep on cots on the floor, so he’s familiar with “I can get up and walk away” etiquette.

I checked up on him at 4:00am the first night, and he was sleeping soundly. He woke up at 6, though, by yelling for me at his door (where we had put a gate up).

Nap time yesterday also went fine. He was pretty tired from running around the park. He went down and stayed down. Today’s nap-time wasn’t as fortunate. It was a massive fail, and he didn’t take a nap at all. I don’t think it had anything to do with the new space though: he just wasn’t tired.

Last night he fell out of bed, and kept sleeping. It was kind of humorous actually. He stirred when S picked him up and put him back in bed. We made it a point to NOT put the slats on the bed, so the mattress is straight on the floor, surrounded by the bed frame. Our hope was that the bed frame would keep him from falling. Clearly, we were wrong. We’re still not going to get a bed rail, because let’s face it: we’d have to surround the whole bed with them, and I’m more worried about G tripping over the rail when being the crazy dude he is, vs. rolling 10″ onto the floor. We will put down a few pillows under it though.

One bonus? I can FINALLY lie in bed with him, if I needed to. There have been so many nights that I wanted to sleep in his bed with him rather than bringing him in bed with us. Obviously the crib wasn’t going to let that happen, and there are only so many hours that our glider chair was comfortable for. For now, no mommy cuddles because I need a wedge to get out of a bed that low to the ground, but it’s good to know that come baby brother debut, it would (hopefully) be easier.

Before I leave, here are some pics of the room, per popular demand. We’re not “done” with it yet, but at this point it’s certainly usable. I really wanted the room to be gray and orange with white accents. Instead it’s gray and white with orange accents. I’m surprised that with orange being such a popular color, how hard it is to find affordable orange bedding. I’m not looking for anything fancy, but I also refuse to spend $150 on a bedding set that I know my kid at some point will yak all over. It’s just going to happen. We did find a set at Bed, Bath & Beyond for a very affordable price, but the orange and gray kind of clash with our colors. So we’re still search for the “right” set. Equally hard to find has been orange fabric to create a chair cover for the rocker. Lastly, I want to disguise the guest bed, so that the cherry wood doesn’t stand out so terribly. I refuse to paint it, so I’m considering a fabric cap. Ideally the fabric will be grippy, so we can do velcro animals, flowers and letters on it: use it as a big art board in a way. Anyway, here goes; and YES, it does look like we robbed IKEA.

Malm twin bed and dresser. Letters from Woodland Manufacturing (brought over from the nursery), and the animals were purchased from Etsy (lion & giraffe from XpressionsThatStick and the elephant from ModernDecals). Diaper pail & trash can courtesy of Costco.

Poang rocking chair and stool, and Besta bookshelf, turned sideways. You guessed it, IKEA.

While this room served as our office, we put in Pax shelves rather than getting bookshelves or looking into custom cabinet solutions. What we did in the nursery (way before it was a nursery, and served as our bedroom) was awesome; but it’s also a little pricey. Pax wardrobes, on the other hand, do an excellent job for a fraction of the cost. Now that this closet has reclaimed its identity, we adapted to G’s needs. In a way, having lived in the other room for the past 2 years, has given me an idea of what I want in the dresser, and what I want in the closet.

By the way, you think he has enough shirts? 2/3 of his closet is courtesy of my local mother’s club. The rest were gifts. You’re looking at the equivalent of $75 of my personal spending (excluding the shoes & socks).

When we get to it really being finished, finished, I’ll do another update.

No!

Just when G finally started using “Yeah”, we entered the age of “NO!” And I don’t mean “No!” in the sense of answering when in conversation. G is now asserting himself by clearly telling us that he doesn’t want to do something.

This morning “No school!” I thought I had at least 4 more years before hearing that one. He LOVES school, but apparently he likes hanging out in his pajamas watching Cat In The Hat more.

Then it’s “NO!” on dinner. “NO!” on getting in the car. “NO!” on getting in his seat. You get the picture. It’s tiring. I’m tired.

He’s 2. I get it. 2, I’ve heard is all about the “NO!”. 3 is then all about the attitude. Joy! 2 more years of pissy toddler behavior. And then 2 more from S2 immediately in his heals.

This brings me to my T + teen Theory. It goes something like this: any age that starts with T or ends in teen is a bad age… except for 10. I don’t hear many parents complaining about their 10-year olds.

So… someone want to tell me why Xanax is not a de-facto prescription for child caregivers?

Ok, I have an hour left of Friday, so this counts, right?

Tonight we got a chance to meet some mommies and kids that I’ve been following for years. It’s strange to get together with someone who you feel you know so well, yet you had never met in person before. It’s cool! Our boys played SO hard, and stayed up late, and (hopefully) had fun. Surprisingly there no tears or injuries, despite the bats, play-kitchen gear, and balls being thrown around.

Our night tonight also gave me a glimpse of what life with triplets could be like. In a word? Terrifying 🙂

J (of Becoming-mom fame), discovering the joy of the storage bin. It’s a storage container, laundry basket, walker, and toddler toy all in one!

Just think… what if you had to put all 3 of these guys to bed? By yourself?

G and J

Look, you can get two toddlers in a bin. Sold as a package deal. We tried for three, but they wouldn’t fit.

Fist bumps.

Say it ain’t so!

So now that G is 2, you think it’s time I put his 12m clothes away? I’ve come to the sad realization that now that his long sleeved shirts are starting to resemble his short-sleeved shirts in arm coverage, it’s probably time to part with them. Except that they are so stinkin’ cute, and some of my favorites are in this size.

Yes, I know S2 will be sporting the same soon enough, but it’s just sad to put them away.

It’s shocking that at 2 G still fits in his 12m clothes, huh? I guess it’s one of few benefits of having a kid on the low end of the charts. You stretch out clothing wear for a looooong time.

But between the outgrown shirts, and the impending move to the bedroom next door, I started prepping his 2T sized clothing. I washed three loads of 2T sized clothes today. Out of the first load came a dozen short sleeved shirts, and about as many long sleeved shirts. Two more loads of folding to go. I think it’s safe to say I won’t need to do any shopping for G for the next year. And, as an added bonus, with this quantity of clothes, I think I’ll only need to do his laundry once a month 🙂

A lesson lost?!?!

Yesterday G and K were bouncing on our bed. G is new to this whole bed-bouncing activity, and actually last night was his first time. You’d think the boy who sings “No more monkeys jumpin'” ‘just cause would’ve learned something from that cautionary tale,  but no. Alas last night he jumped too close to the ledge, bounced off S’ night stand and landed on the floor. He wasn’t hurt (thankfully), but it did startle him a good deal.

So today, we’re in the car, and G begins to sing the monkey song to himself.

G: Doctor said, no more monkeys

Me: The doctor said no more monkeys should do what?

G: No more monkeys!

Me: What should the monkeys not do?

G: Jumpin’ on the bed

Me: Why?

G: Fall head

Me: That’s right. They fall and bump their heads. Did YOU jump on the bed last night?

G: Yeah

Me: Did YOU fall and bump your head?

G: Yeah

Me: Are you going to do it again?

G: Yeah

So there  you have it. No lessons learned here. Our monkey will keep on jumping on the bed. Sigh!

Should I be worried about G having a sibling?

Get ready; Set…

Jump

Go, Horsey, Go!

G at his new kitchen

He likes to wash everything… all at once

… cut his fruit …

… and occasionally eat it (or pelt it at my head).

Then he leaves a fine set of little things for me to pick up from the floor. I don’t like MY kitchen cleanup. This isn’t much better.

No more daycare tears

Today is the second day in a row that G has let me leave daycare without crying for me doing so.

Don’t get me wrong, he really likes daycare. He doesn’t cry because I’m leaving him there. He cries because he wants me to stay and play with him all day. Now, as much as I would like to spend my day finger-painting, being read to, fed snacks and milk, and nap for 2 hours in the middle of the day, someone’s gotta go make the doughnuts. Plus we’ve grown quite accustomed to sleeping inside of a weather-shielding structure.

Until now, when it was time to leave I had to sneak out, hopefully unobserved, so that G wouldn’t cry. I had 3 escape routes, and tried to mix them up as best I can. If S and I ever did drop off together, we also has an exit strategy. Over time G’s gotten pretty smart to all of them, so departure met with various success rates. I felt like each day I was making a prison break, that involved the daycare instructors as my accomplices. There were maps, and secret hand gestures involved. Believe me.

BUT… yesterday and today, I decided to try the “preschool” parent departure approach. It goes something like this: “G would you like to push me out the door?” Wouldn’t you know it? Yesterday, he did. G escorted me all the way to the door; I opened it; he pushed on my rear; out I went and closed the door as he ran back of to kick a ball, eat a piece of waffle, or whatever it is he does. No tears.

Today? Same thing. I don’t know if this is a temporary event, or our new departure routine, but I like it.

More of this, please!

Yeah!

We’ve got a new word. This on it’s own these days isn’t too much of a big deal, since G is sprouting new words & phrases left and right, but it’s more of “what” the new word is. G has now given us “Yeah!”

He got “No!” figured out quite quickly. He even has “Stop!” complete with the hand in your face, but any version of Yes has escaped him until recently. Do you have any idea how frustrating it is when you have a toddler ask for something that you don’t understand and you try to narrow it down? Grunts didn’t help, and when you couldn’t figure it out fast enough, it only made for one pissed off toddler.

So now it’s a bit easier. I can ask him a question and he responds with “Yeah”. Plus I get the added bonus of feeling like we’re having more of a conversation now.

Small steps, but big communication leaps.
